I am planning to obtain my Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in graphic design at UNLV. By obtaining a higher education and excelling in life, I wish to become a positive role model for people.

I have been interested in music and graphic design since middle school. I followed my passions by working with local bands and organizations to create and promote events using different marketing strategies, and through my job at the East Las Vegas Community Center. While I anxiously await the start of my upper-division courses, I am gaining firsthand experience in the music industry by performing with a local reggae band “HALEAMANO”.

My mind is focused, my goals are set, and nothing will stop me.

I am not quite sure what I want to study but it does not hinder my purpose in attending college, although eventually I do hope to find my passion through higher education. My current extracurricular activities include being part of the Hispanic Student Union at CSN. I am a roller derby skater in the Sin City Roller Derby and hope to pass my skills test in two months. Everyone on the team is required to volunteer within the team but I also enjoy volunteering in the community and at institutions; I love the experiences I have had. I met many people and have been presented with many opportunities that have helped me grow as an individual.

I plan to finish my education at CSN spring of 2011 and receive an Associate of Arts degree. I plan on continuing my education at the University of Nevada Reno and obtain a Bachelors of Science degree in Journalism. I enjoy a variety of sports including baseball, soccer, football, even cricket.

Writing has always been something that comes naturally to me. I know that am far from being an award winning writer but through hard work and determination I can achieve anything I put my mind to. I hope to continue writing in my near future since it is truly my passion and calling in life. The vision I have for myself is one of success and excellence in all of my endeavors.

I decided to go to college because I liked the learning experience and wanted to create a number of quality opportunities for myself. A way college helped me do this and find out what I like and not like was through the internships I participated in college. There, I got real life experiences in a number of interesting careers. I was also able to develop my interest for cultures through participating in the Organization of Latin American Affairs Club, the Philippine Society of Boston College Club, and minoring in German. I liked my undergraduate degree but I still want to explore other career options. Using education once more, I plan to keep exploring other career options by enroll in my masters degree at UNLV for Public Administration in the next year.

At an early age, the idea of college was appealing to me. I remember being asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, and already knowing I was going to be interested in becoming a clinical psychologist. A college degree was clearly going to be needed, but I did not realize how much schooling was actually going to be needed. I was in for a pleasant surprise when I found out a doctoral degree was going to be required. Although after all, Doctor Senda does have a nice ring to it! To obtain experience in the field, I acquired a position as an Applied Behavior Analyst, which is a tutor for someone who has been diagnosed with autism. A year later I became an AmeriCorps member where I was able to work with at risk youth as a Youth Program Coordinator for a local non-profit in the Las Vegas Valley. As of now, I am in the process of applying for my doctoral program in clinical psychology. I am pursuing out of state schools, preferably somewhere on the east coast. Once licensed, I plan on coming back to Las Vegas to practice psychology at a counseling center.

College Biomedical Engineering Education for High School Students:

Orientation and Hands-on Experiences

With the rising demands in life science industries and the increasing research interests in highly interdisciplinary biomedical engineering (BME), many universities have been implementing new initiatives to establish and expand BME programs. A college degree in BME instantly identifies a candidate as having training in both engineering and life science, and strengthens the candidate competency in job markets. Aiming at interesting high school students in college BME education, the project team designed, conducted and evaluated three activities: (1) teaching expertise training of high school teachers; (2) lab tours and seminars; and (3) summer camp. A total of 162 students and 6 teachers from three high schools in northern Nevada were participated in these activities. In the beginning of this project, a BME teaching expertise training workshop was organized for teachers. This workshop facilitated teachers to recruit high school students to participate in this project and prepare new BME curricula or after-school programs in their schools. The lab tours brought students to a college environment, demonstrated them college routine research activities, introduced them knowledge base of BME discipline. The seminars in high schools provided faculty members opportunities to talk with more students regarding the importance of BME R&D to human health, the rapid increase of college BME education, college application processes, and the BME job market perspective and sustainability. The summer camp was to seed scientific interests to high potential high school students through hands-on experience, and encouraged them to pursue college education or develop career plan in BME. While implementing the project activities, the project team investigated whether the designed activities (lab tours, seminars, and summer camp) helped students gain more understanding and interests in BME.

Some descriptive statistics from the surveys of these activities are listed as follows:

·    among  89 students attending the seminars, at least 50% students agreed with  the  statements  in  the  survey  form,  and  they  did  enjoy the experiences from the seminar;

· more than 80% of 52 participants gained a good understanding on BME and expressed they enjoyed these tours and would like to recommend their friends to attend if there were chances in future; and

· 90% – 100% of 21 participants felt that they enjoyed the experiences and learned from the camp projects; they liked the lab experiments; they appreciated the opportunities to learn more about biomedical engineering, and more career options for their future; and they may want to explore their college studies in the BME area.

Through the analysis of all statistics data, it can be concluded that bringing students out of their schools to a fresh and friendly university environment and letting them achieve hands-on experiences on BEM technology are efficient approaches in enhancing their understanding and interests in BME. The research findings of this project were described in the paper entitled “Preparing high school students for college biomedical engineering through laboratory technology activities”, which was published in International Journal of Technology in Teaching and Learning (A peer-reviewed journal with 28-33% annual manuscript acceptance rate).

I will be exploring majors but hold a strong interest in Education. I like to be involved and help out around the community. College is a great fit for me because I want to achieve all my goals and start my own career. Having a college education will open various work opportunities. In high school I was involved in several school activities such as student council and cheerleading. Student Council has made a magnificent impact towards my views in pursing higher education. In college I am interested in joining student government and a sorority. I believe these programs increase many networking opportunities and will help me maintain a focus towards school. My college goals are to receive a bachelor’s degree and continue on to grad school. Beginning this new journey in college is a big step for me. I am prepared for what the future has in stored for me.
